I have been watching a lot of Hong Kong Cantonese TVB series. Most of them shows families and friends getting together to have steamboat. They will say something that sounds like, “ta pi lor’. I know ta means to do beat or to do something and lor is pot. But what is pi?

The other day, I also ‘ta pi lor’ at home because I was in the Chinese New Year mood after I bought some tangerines. It was an impromptu steamboat dinner. I just boiled some soup with chicken and Chinese white cabbage.

Grab a few things from the market and we have all we need to have an enjoyable meal.

If you need Chinese steamboat recipe, you can find it on my other food blog. I also posted a Chinese New Year steamboat recipe in an older post on this blog.
Enjoy ta pi lor, ok?

I read the news the other day and one of our main local bank is urging car owners to remortgage their cars. By doing that, it means they will have to pay even more interest to service their loans. I do not like this kind of idea as it can leads one into debt. However, when times are bad, one have to resort to this.
More than two decades ago, when both hubby (then bf) and I were living together, we couldn’t even afford a cheap washing machine. So, we bought that on installment and pay a higher price. We have to forget about any kitchen appliances and oven was definitely out of our budget then.
It seems that things are not going so well around the world. That’s why industries like easyhome rentals come along to help those who need furniture for the home to get them through rent-to-own.
Over here, we call it leasing. In fact, we haven’t hear much about leasing in the last decade but leasing was very much in demand when economy is not so healthy. Otherwise, how are people going to afford things if they cannot lease to own?
In my opinion, if one can save, one ought to. However, if the things are necessities, like computers for the children education or major piece of furniture for the family, then, if they need to lease, they need to.

I have heard and read so much about Prontip which is a Thai foods restaurant located next to a dogs grooming place. My fussy husband plays badminton there and he complained about the smell of the doggies there. So, he refused to bring us to have lunch there eventhough I ‘teh’ for a long time already. He kept joking, “Don’t eat there, the dog fleas all jumped into the foods. If you are not careful, you also get fleas.” Haih…

He finally relented today because I insisted to go there for ‘blogging sake’. The buffet lunch starts at 11.30 am and when I got there around 11.45 am, the place is already filled with a lot of people. The reason? The foods are good and cheap. Not the tastiest Thai foods but still value for money.
The above is the kerabu mango. There are tomyam, fried rice, fried noodle, different kinds of curries and vegetables.

I was delighted to see the different varieties of deep fried yam, deep fried kangkong and deep fried mushrooms. All crispy and hot.

Above is the deep fried kangkong, spring rolls and Thai laksa.

Thai laksa garnished with ginger flower (bunga kantan), long beans and pineapples. The Thai Laksa is the lemak type but the gravy is thickened with fish like Penang assam laksa.

The buffet lunch price is the net price with no service charge or Government tax. There are free drinks and also fresh fruits and sago for dessert.
No wonder so many people are flocking to Prontip for lunch. A plate of rice with three dishes from the economy rice stall easily costs RM6 nowadays. So, where else can you find such cheap lunch with more foods than you can eat? Service is pleasant and they did not even charge my five years old boy eventhough he ate five tiny pieces of fried chicken. That’s why Prontip gets a mention on Malaysia Best food blog. Prontip is P R O N and not P O R N, ok?

Winter Warmers is that little corner lot next to Secret Recipe and opposite Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and in Gurney Plaza. So, with these bigger names, what attract patrons to the lesser known Winter Warmers?
I must say it is their homely feel and the pots of cold fruity teas and herbal teas that makes Winter Warmers buzzing with patrons.

Their food prices are not expensive and they have a variety of cakes, set meals and snack foods which are rather interesting, though not very tasty. The above is the cake of the day which is only RM4.

My children love Winter Warmers pot of teas. It makes them feel grown-up drinking from the lovely glass. Today, we have the iced orange tea. A pot costs RM9.90 and quantity is more than enough for a person. So, usually we share a pot.

I pop by Winter Warmers once in a while because I enjoy the English decor of flowery table cloths, wallpapers and most of all, the lovely cups.

A set of two cups like the above costs RM99.90 from Winter Warmers. I find it rather expensive so I can just admire them displayed on the shelves in Winter Warmers. Beside selling the cups and saucers, Winter Warmers also sell jars of blueberries tea, herbal teas, roses teas and other concoction. I think I will buy one of those jars of teas ‘cos it is only RM12.90.
Service at Winter Warmers is good and they have good service staffs over here at Gurney Plaza’s branch. A nice place to chill after a hard day’s work shopping. Winter Warmers have a website over here.

My Penang food blog is finally getting some decent traffic. Within just a few months, it has gained PR2/10 and I do not think I am going to monetize the blog with anything risky.
It has replaced my other food blog as that food blog has too many posts already. However, starting a new blog is not easy as it takes time to get indexed and get good numbers of subscriber. It takes a few months to get indexed well.
Sadly, if I don’t monetize the blog, it makes only miserable amount.

Tomorrow, if it is a sunny day, I am going to drag my hubby to fetch me to the butterfly farm. I have wanted to take close up shots of the butterflies and flowers.

Fhweet, it is the weekend again. While others weekend start on Friday, mine starts on Thursday because I do not have classes or volunteer work on Friday. So if I can finish all these things that I need to work on by today, I will have the whole weekend to myself.
However, I am suppose to handover my exam assignment. It is two pages only but I have problem dissecting the things. So, let me complete all the diet pills articles so that I can start working on my exam question. Then, I can spend the whole weekend watching soap operas.
I hope to sleep till late tomorrow. I have forgotten how nice it is to wake up at noon. Pure bliss.

I went out shopping yesterday. I wanted to buy a white Christmas tree. However, after going to three malls, I just cannot find the kind of white Christmas tree I want. Many of them are either too slim, too sparse or fakey.
There was one that I love because it comes with lights. Unfortunately, it is too expensive so I cannot afford. I am going to a few more shops and if I cannot find it, I guess I should just spray my green tree to white.
Before I take out the Christmas tree, I guess I should put up some new lights first. I want something like I saw on this Minka lighting site.

Don’t you think this is one of the cutest dumpling? It reminds me of Madonna conical shape bra.

I have been reading nothing but diet pill reviews and more diet pill reviews. In fact, I think I can close my eyes and rattle off the names of them and their ingredients.
I wonder why people are so keen to take the short cut to losing weight. I guess it offers the most promising results and the quickest way. However, I always warn my friends who are into diet pills to be very, very careful and always get their doctor’s advice before they embark on losing weight.
We have read so much scary news of people causing harm to their health. So, remember, always read up and be selective.

I am sure if you have signed up with TextLinkAds before, you will have received an email about the product InLinks. Selling links in this way seems like a cool thing to do because you do not need to do anything. Just put some plugin, and sit back to receive the money at the end of the month.
The links will be automatically inserted into your old blog posts. It seems very inconspicuous and tempting, isn’t it? However, you may want to read what Matt Cutts and TechCrunch said about this method of selling links on our blog to make money.
If you are new to this method of selling links in blog posts, you may want to take note that it can cause you to lose your pageranks. When you lose your pagerank, you will have difficulties getting back the pagerank. And without pagerank, people will not buy any more links from your site. So, weigh all these risks before making money selling links.

I bet many people in Penang are not aware that there is a mini aquarium in Batu Maung. Well, I knew of its existence for a long time already but never bother to visit because I have been to the huge aquariums in Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong and even Langkawi.

However, it is the school holidays and we need to find something to occupy the kids. So, we head to the Batu Maung aquarium. It is located near the Bayan Lepas airport and you can access it via the coastal highway. There are signs so one cannot miss it.

I didn’t take many photos in the aquarium as they do not allow flash light from cameras. Anyway, there is nothing special there. The tanks are all very small and the water rather murky. You will have better views of fishes at Chew Thean Yeang aquarium (a fish shop) in Burmah Road.
But for RM5 entrance fee for adult, RM1.50 for kids above 12 years old, it is good for kids to have fun.

They have a large tank in one of the rooms like a theatre. It is one of the more interesting spot in the whole acquarium.

The other interesting thing is the pond outside the aquarium. It is filled with lots of carps so my kids enjoyed feeding the carps.

If I recall correctly, the aquarium is open from 10 am to 5 pm and closes on Wednesday. You can find the direction from Tourism Penang site.
How to get there
The Fisheries Research Institute and Aquarium is located in Batu Maung, opposite the Batu Maung post office. You can get there by bus no. 69 (the yellow bus which goes by the name of Milan), by cab or private transport. The signs are quite clear and you can’t miss the building.

Our children rarely have chances to play the traditional kampung games anymore. In fact, my little boy does not even know what is a sepak takraw. I wonder if other mommies and daddies use crib bedding for their babies? I do not use them when my boys were young as I do not put them in their own cribs. I let my babies sleep next to me in the big bed.
However, not all parents can endure sleeping with a tiny, wriggly bundle next to them. Some parents are afraid of squashing their own kids. So, these parents are better off putting their babies in their own place.
The crib bedding with cutesy cartoons are actually so cosy and pretty. Looking at them makes me want to have babies again!

We had dinner at Cafe De Tai Thong the other night and we saw this funny looking pau. My older boys said “Look ma! Nen nen pau!” Nen nen means boobs in Hokkien.

Since it looks so unique, I ordered one. The lady told me it is call ‘tai long pau’ which is the opposite of siu long pau hor? Tai long means big dragon and pau means dumpling.

The rows of many varieties of steamed Chinese dumplings.

So, this is what is inside the dumpling. It is a layer of the normal pau dough covering something like a lor mai kai.

The top of the pau can be torn off at the top, revealing the char siew inside.
And that’s nen nen pau for you.

So many of the celebrities seem to shrink back into their pre-pregnancy. All these publicity has caused the new moms to feel pressured to do the same. Before they return to work after their maternity leaves, they insist to squeeze back into their pre-pregnancy clothes. However, in real life, this is not the case. Some even went as far as starving themselves to get back into shape. Others resorted to diet pills such as Fenphedra.
Well, it is not healthy for new moms to lose weight too soon after birth. If they are breastfeeding, then all the more they shouldn’t do that. If the moms wish to try dieting, it is safer for them to consult their doctor’s advice.

I got bored of our regular meals so I made Chinese steamboat for the weekend dinner. For a large family like mine, it is not worth it to go for steamboat buffet because the total price for six persons is exorbitant and we get lousy quality of foods. Moreover, my sons all have their quirky picky food choices so it is a dread to eat with them. One only eat prawns. One eat only meats, not seafoods. One doesn’t like to eat. So, let’s have steamboat at home.

STEAMBOAT SOUP RECIPE
If you have really fresh seafoods and meats, you do not need any flavour enhancing soup. I boiled a pot of 2 liter soup using only chicken bones and Chinese long, white cabbage with a bulb of garlic and some salt and pepper.

What goes into your steamboat is entirely your choice. Usually, Chinese steamboat has a balance of meat, seafoods, vegetables like tang oh, mushrooms and whatever fancy fishballs you enjoy. I bought some really fresh garoupa, squid and large prawns. For the chicken and fish, I season them with a bit of cornflour, soya sauce and pepper.

I made some deep fried meat balls. You can use either chopped prawns or minced meat. For about a handfull of meat, add one egg and 4 tablespoon of flour. Season with a bit of salt and pepper. Deep fry these tiny meat/prawn balls. The purpose of the flour and egg is to soak up the delicious steamboat soup.
I also bought some soyabean sheets which have been deep fried and crispy.
Usually, steamboat soup taste very flavourful towards the end. So, we added some noodles and egg for the ultimate enjoyment.

Sauces are very important as dipping sauce for the cooked meat and seafoods. However, my kids don’t take chillies so I didn’t bother. I deep fried some dried sole fish and pounded them. It is really delicious to scatter the sole fish on the noodle soup.

Basically, steamboat is really easy to make at home. The cost of my steamboat is probably below RM30 and I have huge, fresh prawns, really sweet and fresh garoupa and squids. Since it is an impromptu preparation, I didn’t have the time to grab some nice beef or it would have been much nicer.
When I was in Hongkong, they sell pre-packed steamboat soup in cartons, premade sauce packs which can be added to water to make the soup and all kinds of delicious seafoods imported from Japan like fresh oysters, scallops and other fancy items. It was so convenient to make steamboat because you can pick up whatever items you like and enjoy.
However, in Malaysia with such hot weather, eating steamboat is not so fun. If you go to one of those aircond restaurant, the place reeks of the fishy smell. If you eat al fresco, you sweat buckets.

crab - baked, originally uploaded by 5xmom.
When I was pregnant, my mom disallowed me to eat crabs. She said if I eat crab, next time when my baby is born, the baby will walk like a crab.
Of course, I never believe in taboos. I still ate the crabs when mom wasn’t looking.
She also forbade me from eating octopuses. The octopuses have that vaccum-like suction. So, mom said if I eat it, I will have difficulties giving birth as the suction will cause my baby hard to be born.
Again, of course, I never believe it and ate all the octopuses I want. But true enough, I couldn’t have a vaginal birth and needed a caesarean.
You believe that? Nay…..not me.

I have read about fat burner and seen the ads on TV. They made it like it is some miracle that can burn fats. However, I doubt it works so easily.

This news from Malaysiakini caught my attention and makes me wonder.
Malaysia has suspended imports of whole chicken and chicken parts from Thailand with immediate effect following a bird flu scare in the neighbouring country, state media reported.
Isn’t it kind of ridiculous that our country needs to import chicken from Thailand? Why can’t a country with its vast lands rear enough chicken to feed its own nation? Why do we need to rely on other countries?
Anyway, I wonder where do these imported Thai chicken go to?

If you wish to make money through your blogs, one of the thing to remember is - Always treat each page or each blog post as a website on its own. Each blog post has its own value if you get it right. Sometimes, we only need two or three pages in a blog with hundreds of pages to make money. It is like the gold nugget hidden amongst the hundreds of blog craps we write.
Here’s how to find that gold nugget -
a) Find out the internal pageranks of your blog posts. You can do this by googling ‘check internal pagerank’. (I am not going to help by giving you the links. Hehehe)
b) Keep an eye on those spams coming in. Usually, the spammers know the value of our blog posts and they will spam that few pages with trackbacks and comments.
c) Check your organic traffic and know what are some of the keywords that bring in the traffic.
d) Analyse your Google analytics.
Here’s how to make money from them.
Since most of these old blog posts are rather old pages, you can stuff as many ads as you want because your regular readers do not see them anymore. Who cares if the ads overwhelm your smart thoughts. Organic traffic or those random surfers who stumbled into that page are not in the mood to read how cute your child is, for example. Probably, in that post, you have a mention of some highchairs or baby stroller or something like that.
Go for the kill. Stuffs Amazon or any kind of affiliates widgets or products recommendation there with the products your surfers may most likely buy.
Add an extra Google ads there, if you have not already used up the 3 ads per page. Remember Google Adsense only only 3 ads per page.
When you have find those gold nugget pages, remember to nurture and take good care of them.
You can do this by occasionally mention it in your newer blog posts. For example, you can write something and mention baby high chair and link to that old post. It helps with the search ranking.
In conclusion - Treat each post of your blog like it is a site on its own and soon, you will be making money from them.

A lot of people are turned off with the chore of roasting a whole chicken because most times, they find it so difficult to get the whole chicken to cook thoroughly. I think it is common to either undercook the chicken or over cooking it. Undercooking means we will get the horrifying blood oozing out of the chicken when we serve them. Overcooking means we are serving a piece of cardboard.

So, if you wish to roast chicken but is not confident enough of getting a perfectly cooked chicken, you can try this method. I will get the chicken seller to cut the chicken open by slicing it at the breast part. Then, place the chicken like what you see above. During roasting, all the parts of the chicken will be cooked at around the same temperature as the surface area is exposed. Whereas, if you roast a whole chicken, sometimes the part at the bottom is not cooked.

If parts of the chicken is browning faster than the rest, merely place some aluminium foil on the part or like me, I shield it with a bit of lemon. Roasting chicken needs a bit of juggling but the effort is worth it. One cannot just put the chicken into the oven, turn to the correct temperature and return 1 hour later and expect a perfectly done chicken. Those things happen only in oven advertisements. In our homes, we need to watch over the chicken, see that it is not burnt or undercooked.
To know if the chicken is cooked through, just take a skewer or chopstick and poke those parts which are meatiest. If not blood ooze out, it is cooked.

When the main parts of the chicken have been eaten, there are still meat attached to the bones. I love to tear off those meat and make a chicken salad with it. The other day, I use blue cheese and pomegranate.
Yummy….
To get the recipe for roast chicken and find more tips, do use my related posts. (I am posting this in a hurry so will add the links later.)

I read the entertainment news the other day and Julia Roberts said she is too old to play the role of sequel of the movie Pretty Woman. And I am glad she said that ‘cos many other actresses do not admit they are old. So many of them held back the years with plastic surgery, botox and whatnots to stay young.
All these trends have made a lot of younger women paranoid about growing old and start a trend of plastic surgery, botox and all kinds of age defying surgeries. I don’t know why I suddenly thought of Pretty Woman when I was looking at those fabulous hotels on the las vegas strip.
I guess the bright lights and glamor of Vegas is closely related to Pretty Woman.

I guess it is human nature that they have no qualms asking me for help and yet, seem reluctant to use a referral link even when they do not lose anything. Oh well…..that’s why I rarely reply emails to me nowadays and prefer to make blog posts and mail to them instead.

LOL, I am mulching into a pile of fermenting enzyme. Well, first of all, I recently got myself interested in making fruits enzyme. It is really easy to do and in another two weeks, I will be tasting the first batch of the fruit enzyme. Then, after making fruit enzyme, I decided to venture into making kitchen waste enzyme which consists of fruits skins and vegetables in a mixture of brown sugar.
I watch the fruits fermenting into a pile of mulch every day. And that’s how I feel now. I had watched five hours of TV series. Well, not continuously five hours as I stopped for church, stopped for preparing dinner and doing other routine stuffs. But I added up all the hours and I have watched five long hours of TV.
Now, I have another 90 minutes to finish but my mind just cannot take anymore of the series. I wonder if I can drink some best gourmet coffee and stay awake until I completed the series? If I do this everyday, I can kiss my blogs goodbye.
Now that I mention coffee, I wonder where I can get the best tasting coffee at 2 am in the morning? Maybe I should order the best coffee beans from this site and get an expresso machine. Then, I can watch 24 hours of TV till my eyeballs roll out from the socket.

Roast turkey, originally uploaded by 5xmom.
Moms and dads, have you ever celebrate Christmas with all the jazz? I know many families now like to go out and have a good dinner at some restaurants to save on the work. Moreover, not many people know how to cook.
However, I personally feel that if we can start some tradition like celebrating Christmas in the traditional way of prepare special foods, decorating the house, inviting the relatives and friends over, it will be something that our children will treasure when they grow up.
So, if you are looking for recipe for roast turkey or Christmas dinner ideas, please go to my food blog.

Fresh pasta is made of eggs, water and flour. Some recipe calls for olive oil while the version from Jamie Oliver homemade pasta recipe uses only water and eggs.
Therefore, it is awfully easy to clean a pasta machine. One just need to brush off the extra dough and flour stuck to the machine, wipe with cloth and it is clean.
I have also made a post on how to clean a pasta machine on my other food blog and hope no one wash the darn machine like my friend did. She got her pasta machine rusty just after one use. *roll eyes*

A friend bought a pasta machine after she heard how easy it is to make homemade pasta using a pasta maker. Before reading the instructions, she thought she can wash the machine. No, you cannot wash a pasta machine because there are lots of parts and gears and whatnots in there. It will turn rusty in the insides eventhough the exterior is made of steel.

According to the little slip of paper with the instructions on how to clean a pasta machine, they suggested brushing off the dough and flour with a soft brush. Then, let it air dry and store. Next, when you want to make pasta again, just take a small piece of the dough and roll them through the machine on different settings. Roll them through several times and if there are any dirts, they will come out with the dough.
Discard the dough because it is probably dirty.
See? So easy, no? There are some people who actually suggested taking the machine apart with screw driver and stuffs! That’s crazy because the machine needs precision to operate properly. Just leave it alone, don’t ever take it apart to wash.
However, if you are buying a new pasta machine, do make sure that there is a guarantee that it won’t rust. Most of the Italian brand pasta makers are of good quality, anyway.

I got an email from a new company in Malaysia. It goes like this :
Hi Ms Lilian Chan,
Greetings!
We are from blablabla and we’ve noticed that you are running text-ads (AdSense) on your website. We at blablabla can offer you a platform where you can start selling more banner-ads and text-ads on your site and get paid with better rates (80/20) and also in Malaysian Ringgit.
Who are we?
In a nutshell blablabla is first in Malaysia to offer bloggers and also webmasters a transparent marketplace where advertisers can buy ad spaces directly from publishers. At blablabla we strive to create an open and profitable advertising network that is win-win situation for both advertisers and publishers
blablabla can also work well with your existing advertisers. You have the ability to switch back to your existing advertiser automatically, if there are currently no adverts coming from CastClick.com. This will thus ensure maximum ad space fill for your blog, hence maximizing revenue.
Chey….think I was just born yesterday? Why would I want to sell my ad space in Malaysian Ringgit when I can sell them for USD at RM3.6 per USD1?
Next, think my blog is the back of the bus? Why would I want to carry local ads from very capalang companies? I prefer to have my agent, Nuffnang to secure the deal for me. At least with Nuffnang, I know they have a group of professionals (some of whom were friends with me even before they join Nuffnang) who knows who I am and won’t just stuff any ole’ kiam siap advertisers on me.
I have taken a look at your company website and there is nothing that turns me off than stupid bloggers vote bloggers’ blog to get popular. Keep it lah, friend.
But I wish you success. I have seen many US companies trying to live up to the same mission like yours and they have caplap already lor.
I hope local bloggers won’t be susceptible to all these offers because our grandma told us, “Pin dou yau kum tai jek kapna chui kai thiu?” (Where got such big bull frog jumping on the road? Bullfrogs are delicacies and hence, they rarely hop around for us to catch. Therefore, it means, no such thing as free lunches.)
My advice to personal bloggers who have good followers is not to commercialised your site too much with ads because it waters down your reputation. Ahem, look who is talking. HOHOHOHO.

I got a message on my PayPal account after I logged in.

When I click the link, it leads me to the details of my Alrajhi debit card which I use to withdraw my money to. Yet, when I confirm, it says the details are wrong.
Actually, I have confirmed my PayPal account with my credit card many years ago when I activated my PayPal account. So I am not sure why PayPal is asking again.
Do you get this same message from PayPal? I would like to get the withdrawal limit lifted if I can. Right now, I have to withdraw in batches of USD500 each time. Every time I withdraw, I need to pay USD5. So, if I can withdraw, say USD5,000 (LOL, I am just dreaming ok?) each time, I will save a lot of USD5.
