Should I take a bike lesson?

My second son is 16 years old and where we come from, sixteen years old means one can take a licence to ride a bike. So, he was pondering if he should go ahead and ride a bike because he said it is time he goes on his own instead of depending on me to fetch him from place to place.

While chatting, he suggested that I also do the same. I can ride a bike but I do not have a bike licence. So, I cannot ride on the road. I laughed so hard at the suggestion because I never thought of doing it.

But who knows, I may want to venture into this fantastic idea. One day, when I am graying, I may want to own a Harley. Talking about Harley, if you are looking for Harley parts, here’s where you can find them.

So, should I?

I am so tired of a relative who is constantly bugging us with his debt problems. In fact, I do not wish to hear anything about his problems anymore because no matter how we advised him to consolidate his losses and try to get what he can, he refused. There are many reasons for him to get into this trouble.

He likes to put on a show with good images. Big car, big house, branded clothes and so on. With a high limit credit card, he kept splurging and splurging. Then, finally his business hits rock bottom and now, he must find someone to bail him out.

Flood!

Today we experience the worst floods in the years we have stayed here. Though we know our area is flood prone but so far, none of the floods are as bad as today.

One of my neighbour’s car floated in the flood water and was moving along in the flood water like a little toy boat. We do not know where the owner is as no one is home. Looks like they are in for a shock when they get home.

As for the rest of us, we had to park our cars far away from home because of the fear of water rising further. Some of the owners who love their cars very much and use car cover to protect their cars are going to have sleepless night tonight because the rain is still pelting down.

Does cheap hotel equals cheap?

I have stayed in some cheap hotels when I was in Europe and they turned out to be one of the most memorable places I have ever stayed. In fact, the hotels or rather motels I stayed in were barely two stars and yet, they offered so much that five stars hotels couldn’t.

Cheap hotels does not equal cheap service or cheap surrounding. Sometimes, those quaint little places provide so much warmth and welcoming ambience. One feels like staying in a home of a friend than a hotel.

There are some hotels which have tiny elevator. There is this place in Paris where the elevator has no lights and can accomodate only three person. Even our luggage couldn’t go in! Of course, I dare not ride in the elevator as I have problems with tight and enclosed spaces. I used the staircase and when we got up to the room, it has the most adorable balcony with flowers and colourful pots. The view was fabulous as well.

So, if you are going to travel and wish to find cheap hotels to put up, just look around. Normally, to play it safe, I would check the travel forums and find out if the hotel is recommended by other travellers. Just take the hotel name, Google it a bit and read. Then, grab the attractive offers and enjoy your holidays.

Crispy Chinese roasted pork - Video

I don’t know how I stumbled upon this roast pork video. But oh boy, now I am hankering for some really crispy, crackling Chinese roasted pork.

Chinese Crispy Roast Pork - Click here for funny video clips

The video is a homemade video and I believe is from Singapore. The guy who made it uses only minced garlic to season the pork and rub the skin with salt. I notice the many steps he did to get that crackling skin.

1) Heat for 10 minutes

2) Take out and poke the skin.

3) Put back and roast for one hour.

4) Cut off the hardened skin.

5) Season the meat and keep in fridge for two hours so that the inner part is cold

6) Put back into the oven at highest heat

7) Roast till the skin burned! This is the unique part. The skin turned black.

Then, he scrapped off the blackened part to get that crispy skin.

Some good ideas in roasting pork.

I only wish his chopping board is cleaner!

Cooking Indian on a cold, rainy day

It has rained for a long time today and the weather is so cold. So, I need something hot and warm for dinner. Going out is not an option because no one is keen to go out in the rain, hunting for foods.

So, I cooked this stir fried cauliflower, Indian style. Spices are so cheap in our country so it will be a pity if we don’t use it to the max. I bought a packet of cinnamon sticks and star anises for only RM1+. I am using them in my dishes eventhough they serve very little purpose other than to give it the ‘Spice Look’.

Actually, making something that tastes remotely Indian is not that difficult. Basic ingredients like tumeric, green chillies, curry leaves, dried chillies and mustard seeds are all we need. You can get small packets of mixed spices for cooking curry fish from any sundry shop or supermarket. Sometimes, they costs merely 30 sen and you have a nice mix of mustard seeds, fenugreek, coriander, black pepper, fennel and other stuffs.

In order not to curb your imagination, I shall not specify the type of vegetables to use. However, give those hardy vege a quick blanch in hot water so that they cook faster when stir fried.

I will also not give the exact portions of what spices to use. Just throw whatever you can get your hands on, including curry powder if you wish.

It is the mix of the green chillies, curry leaves, various types of spices and tumeric that gives the vegetable stir fry its signature ‘Indian flavour’.

Here’s a general idea :

300-400 grams of vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, white radish, long beans or etc
(give the vege a quick boil for faster cooking)

two teaspoons of mixed spices
two dried chillies
one teaspoon of tumeric powder (if you have fresh tumeric, just slice them)
4 pips of garlic, chopped coarsely
1 sprig curry leaves

Flavourings
salt and some sugar to balance out the spiciness

Method :

Heat wok and put in the mixed spices, curry leaves and dried chilies. Let the spices pop and crackle in the wok for a while.

Addsome oil. A few drips of ghee will be great. Put in the garlic and vegetables.

Stir fry and add tumeric powder and season with salt and sugar.

There you have it. A dish that goes great with white rice and can warm up the body on rainy days. It is really ‘Indian-ish’ and good enough to serve to your Indian friends.

However, for those who receive a lot of calls and those who are trying to spy on some folks, you may want to know how this service can trace not only the phone number but where the person and the call is made from.

Now, does this sound rather wicked? You know…let’s say you have a number that frequently calls your spouse and you wonder if it is really a company or some other mysterious figure. All you need is to check and tadaa…it will lead you to the address.

When I was in Hongkong for about three weeks on a stretch, the staples we ate were mostly wantan mee because it is the cheapest. Not really cheap as it costs HKD24 or about RM12 per person. Over there, their wantan mee only has basic things like a few strands of vegetables, few pieces of your choice of things, either wantan, char siew, roasted pork, roasted duck or whatever. There isn’t a combination like ours where we get char siew with wantan and vegetables.

So, I am always very appreciative of our country where a decent wantan mee only costs at most RM3.50 (over here in Penang) and you get wantan, char siew, pieces of chicken, crispy lard and vegetables plus mushrooms.

The above is from Northam Food Court. Not exactly tasty but the roasted pork certainly looks good in photo, isn’t it?

I got a mail this morning warning me that I have broken Kontera Terms of Service.

We wrote to you about a week ago, regarding the importance of complying with our TOS Agreement by running only one in-text provider. Currently, it does not appear that you have resolved this matter. It is important to us to maintain fast responses when pages load as well as for our publishers to adhere to the terms of our agreements with them.

Please remove all competitive in-text products from your pages immediately, as we are not willing to work in conjunction with any other in-text providers. We value our relationship with you and to-date have fulfilled the terms of our agreement with you. We ask that you do the same.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us. Thanks for your consideration of this important matter. We certainly appreciate your continued interest in Kontera and look forward to working with you further. Take care.

Well, I didn’t get any mail previously. And I am not sure which blog they are referring to because several blogs of mine are running Kontera.

I have written to them and tried Googling to find out which ad company they are referring to.

My prime suspect is :
1) Chitika - In links text

The funny thing is I don’t recall if I have used this ad because from my Chitika panel, I don’t see any records.

So, does anyone knows what is against Kontera?

Seafood sinigang - Philippines dish

I found a food stall called Little Philippines in Northam Foodcourt selling seafood sinigang. It costs RM15 for a pot but is enough to feed two. I had tried making my own sinigang after I read about it from another food blogger’s blog.

My recipe for sinigang is over here. I didn’t make a post of the cooked sinigang because the pot I made didn’t turn out too tasty and it looked kinda ‘limpy and brown’.

So, yesterday, I got my first taste of sinigang cooked by Filipinos and I must say it is quite different from the one I cooked. I must have overcooked my pot of sinigang and hence, it turned out more like ‘kiam chye boey’.

As you can see, the soup is quite clear and the taste is mild. They use white radish, long beans, onions, tomatoes, red chillies and for the seafoods, they added prawns, squids and fish. It is an appetizing dish, perfect with white rice. However, it is still nothing near our Malaysian assam pedas or kiam chye boey. Malaysia boleh!

The stall sells non-halal foods.

Buah kurma segar - Fresh dates

This year, we are getting ripe fresh dates. In the previous year, the dates were rather ‘green’ and it’s taste is rather tart. I love fresh dates because it has this buttery, caramel like sweet taste. In fact, I normally eat until I get a sore-throat. These dates are really nutritious and a few of my breastfeeding friends insisted that eating dates gave them more breast milk.

My hubby observed that the price of the fresh dates this year is cheaper than last two years. Trust an accountant to remember the prices of everything. Grrrr….He said previous year, a kilogramme can go as high as RM30. Normally he would buy only a bunch for me because he knows I would get sick and yet, insist to eat.

However, this year the price dropped to RM15 per kilogramme. You can find cheaper prices in Jalan Kapitan Keling where Little India is. I found the pasar ramadhan in Kampung Melayu selling for RM18/kg. But I prefer to buy from the retailer in Little India because he kept them nicely chilled in a huge, clean fridge.

I am going back to Little India Pasar Ramadhan because I discovered some really nice curries sold by the Indian Muslims there. They also have other nice Indian Muslims kuehs and other savoury snacks.

Instant food court

I passed by one of the busy road in town yesterday and notice they have erected a huge, spanking new food court with lots of stalls. If I remember correctly, I have never seen the construction before. And out of the blue, they have a large building with hundreds of seats. At night the place is so brightly lit, you cannot miss it.

I believe nowadays, they have make use of those Precast Concrete to build and instead of all the dusts and dirt, one can set up a huge place in a relatively short time. So, whether you are building in a busy town or a small lane, it is not a problem anymore as everything is prepared in advance and it is easily set up.

They have everything including Precast Concrete Septic Tanks and whatever structure you can think off. Now, I only wish it is that easy to do renovation for my home. Right now, as I am typing this, the construction in my immediate neigbour’s apartment unit it driving me nuts. Even my keyboard vibrate whenever they drill the wall. I hope they don’t accidentally knock down the wall separating our homes.

Does energy bars give energy?

I know marathon runners bring with them on their long marathons. My husband also bring a few with him when he goes on the hiking expedition with his buddies. I asked him if energy bars really give energy? Can I take them in place of my breakfast when I am in a hurry to go out for my volunteer work?

He told me one doesn’t feel a burst of energy but merely to make one feel full. I have gone out a few times without breakfast and you know what? I can hear my stomach growling and rumbling when I was talking with the patients. Since I am standing up and they are lying down, all the more they can hear my tummy thundering sounds.

Maybe I should equip myself with some small protein bars for those mornings when I didn’t have time to grab a decent breakfast.

No wonder some of the patients whom have known me well asked every morning, “Have you taken your breakfast yet?” Probably they have heard my poor stomach going hungry. However, I hate the smell of vanillin normally found in some of the high protein bars. But these natural energy bars claim they don’t have artificial flavourings so it may be edible.

Is your blog a bonsai or a meadow of weeds?

I have a balance of both - i.e. the bonsai and the weed.

Why bonsai? Because some of my blogs grow at such a slow pace, they are almost not growing at all. By growing, I mean the pagerank, traffic and RSS subscriber numbers. Yet, I call it a bonsai because though they grow very slowly, the ad incomes from these blog are lucrative. One of my barely three months old blog has made a lot of money.

Meanwhile, I have my personal blog which grows and grows and yet, I don’t earn much from it. Recently, I notice an increase in traffic because of Google indexing. I saw an increase in organic traffic. Unfortunately, the income is almost stagnant.

So, between a fast growing blog and one that stays unknown, I will prefer building a few more of such bonsai blogs. My advice is not to be too fast or too impatient in seeing your blog growth. Fill it with lots of useful keywords and just sit back and wait for it to ‘mature’. Good luck in making money blogging.

Pasar Ramadhan Kampung Melayu, Pulau Pinang

The Pasar Ramadhan in Kampung Melayu, Penang is greatly improved this year. They have nice tents for the stall holders. Hmmm…I am not sure if this is part of the change we experience with a new state government?

The number of stalls also increased this year and hence, there are even more choices.

The masjid next to the pasar is giving away free bubur lambuk. However, you need to bring your own container. The bubur lambuk smells great but unfortunately, I don’t get a portion as I do not have a container with me. I have never tasted bubur lambuk before and am not even sure if it is salty, sweet or savoury?

I didn’t buy much on this trip because after ‘inspecting’ all the stalls, I do not know what to buy. Got this ikan terubuk belah belakang and it was fun eating because the fish has millions of bones and they are not the ordinary bones but bones like a hair split ends. If I have been fasting the whole day, I don’t think I can eat ikan terubuk because it takes a long time to separate the bones from the flesh.

Got a packet of nasi lemuni. I wonder if this is the nasi lemuni awet muda or not?

The foods there in Kampung Melayu are still very cheap. Got this freshly fried karipap for only RM1 for three pieces.

If you are a Penangite, there are two very interesting pasar ramadhan you can visit. One is this Kampung Melayu one and the other is the Tanjung Tokong.

Rewarding self with foie gras at Deluxious

The only other time I had foie gras or fatten goose liver was in Hongkong several years ago. At that time, I had it with cheese fondue and it was an unforgettable taste of fat melting in the mouth. Though it is liver, it doesn’t have the powdery texture. Instead, it is like a piece of fat melting in the mouth.

I ordered the foie gras with linguine at Deluxious Fusion Foods restaurant in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah on my son’s birthday. I told him it is my celebration as well. The dish is the most expensive of the set lunch at RM58++.

Meanwhile, the birthday boy ordered a lamb dish call miso lamb or something like that. He liked the sweetish taste of the tender lamb which had been cooked till crispy on the outside.

We have 5-course set lunch which includes a soup, salad, main dish, dessert and coffe or tea. The miso lamb set costs RM33.90++

My third son ordered a creamy sauce pasta and it is tasty as well. His set is call the 3-course set lunch and costs RM23.90++ if I am not mistaken. The three courses consist of soup (or salad), main dish and unlimited amount of ice-cream.

The salad that is part of the 5-course set lunch has smoked salmon, egg and croutons with wasabi sauce. For the soup, they gave us clam chowder which is hearty and full of clams.

They gave us lots of dinner rolls with plenty of butter. My little boy asked for additional buns and they gave us extra ones without charges. I like this little gesture from Deluxious. Most places would charge us extra.

Deluxious is housed in an old bungalow with lots of spaces. I like the high ceiling and the catchy colours. We were there rather late, at almost 3 pm because my #2 son the birthday boy only finished school at 2.30 pm. Set lunch is served till 3 pm. They have plenty of private rooms, ideal for catering to small groups. There is also a spa upstairs and for a small price, you get free meals with spa treatment.

My eldest son ordered the salmon confit (or something like that) and the salmon is cooked just right. It is almost raw on the inside which is how salmon should be cooked.

Deluxious has plenty of parking spaces and is certainly a good place to have a quick lunch. It is along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, near the abandoned army quarters. If I am not mistaken, they serve no pork but the restaurant serves alcohol and has a wide range of wines.

They have cheaper set lunch that costs RM13.90 only. But these are mainly local dishes like fried rice, fried hor fun and etc.
